Cellulite Defined

The definition of cellulite is that it is the fatty tissue that can be found directly below the skins surface. It is this fatty tissue that rests upon a firm layer of collagen connective tissue. Our skin appears smooth when we are younger due to the fatty tissue under the skin being smooth. When the flexibility and strength are lost from this fatty tissue, it begins to weaken, which results in noticeable dimples or bumps taking place on the surface of the skin. It is these dimples and bumps that are signs of cellulite. For many people, this is an unwanted sign of aging. However, after saying that, there are some adolescents that are already able to see cellulite on their bodies. This definition alone leads me to believe that excercise and over all body toning can have a huge affect on the appearance of cellulite.

Cellulite is often apparent in postnatal women, or women who take birth control pills. This is because the body’s waste system cannot eliminate the enormous flow of estrogen in the body. A traumatic injury whereby the circulatory system has been disturbed can also cause cellulite. This is because the area is damaged and weakened.

Cellulite can form in both men and women, some people think cellulite only occurs in women. But I must ad the percentage of women with cellulite is much higher than that of men. This is because of the network of fat cells deep in the skin. A woman’s cells are smooth in shape, almost reaching the surface of the skin, which causes a dimpling effect. Whereas a man’s cells are shaped more sharply and are deeper in the skin, which rarely causes dimples as we class as cellulite.

One of the primary causes of cellulite begins with our lymphatic system. Cellulite begins when our skin experiences impaired blood flow and lymph circulation. It is these two factors that cause the subcutaneous layer of the skin to become blocked as the blood circulation is largely decreased.

Because of the starvation of blood flow, this skin tissue is then weakened, and the tissue begins to retain fluid. Because the lymph circulation has been effected, the lymph drainage is unable to carry away the unwanted waste that is trapped in our skin. Because this waste has nowhere to go, it remains under the skin. The veins and capillaries also become weakened, due to the decrease in healthy circulation. An increased pressure is then caused from this leakage which reroutes the blood around that particular cellulite area. Due to the poor circulation which causes the fats and toxins to remain in the skin tissue, cellulite will develop. Yikes!

Cellulite Factors

Some of the factors that contribute to cellulite are:

  • Heredity
  • An insufficient intake of water
  • Poor eating habits

Eating habits such as consuming alcohol, caffeine and spicy food will all contribute towards cellulite. This is because the toxins that these products produce become trapped in the fatty tissue.

  • Smoking
  • Smoking will cause cellulite as it damages the connective tissue that causes the effect of dimpling.

  • Tension & Stress
  • Tension and stress can cause your muscles to seize up, which will cause the connective tissue that covers the muscles to also seize up. The tissue will also become blocked with tension, which will prevent the correct elimination of waste and purification.

  • Medication
  • Certain medications such as diet pills, sleeping pills and diuretics can all cause cellulite.

  • Lack of Excercise
  • Lack of exercise will also cause cellulite. By undertaking exercising, the muscle tone in your body will be improved. It will also improve circulation and overall well-being, which will all assist in breaking the blocked tissue and purify the body.

    Although there are relatively few causes of cellulite, it is important to remember that cellulite can be avoided by exercising and detoxifying the body of unwanted fatty, waste deposits.
